The view from our bed, to the front door (see Burr), to the Beach...told you the waves were going to swallow me up! Yes, still just chilling out in Phu Quoc, Vietnam. We actually woke up really early due to sunlight (6:30am)- I am sure you all feel terribly sorry for us. We hung around the beach for a bit, Burr ran and I did yoga. Then a little breakfast followed by lots of laying around at the beach. Burr bought "The 7 habits of highly effective people" by Stephen Covey and read it at the beginning of our journey. Now I am reading it....for some reason it doesn't read as quickly as Confessions of a Shopaholic, but its good. At least I have the feeling I am being somewhat productive.
Finally at about 5:30pm tnight we decided it was time to start our 45 min. hike into town. Now, we could take a $4 taxi ride but the walk is on the beach and its not like we are late for anything - so why not walk it? But it is up hill, digging through about 6 inches of sand with each step, and my legs are terribly sore after....and of course dripping in sweat*
*Side note - I take approximately 5 showers a day in Southeast Asia, I'm sure my hair is going to fall out soon from dryness, but its just so hot!!!
So we start our journey and head to the night market again and this time we order crab and scallops. Oh, but first Burr has to have his grilled corn on the cob for $.50. The crabs come and we have to schuk (sp?) them hot of the grill, Burr showed me (Steve you would be so proud!!!)....and Lee you would have lots of scallops off the grill, delicious. And of course we end of evening at Buddy's Ice Cream shop with hopping techno tunes, free internet, and of course my fav ice cream!
Tomorrow is our last day on the beach for the rest of our trip. After this its onto Singapore for 1 night, then Hong Kong for a few days, followed by San Fran and Napa Valley. Yep, that is right America we are headed home. The world of customer service!!!!!
Our Ranking of Southeast Asia places to go (Note - we have to exclude South Africa because we have a camp-like obsession of our safari and it will always come first)
1. Phu Quoc, Vietnam - really neat little island, very relaxed, cheap, great seafood, perfect little beach to just hide out (Note - do not come here if you are afraid of flying (Kacie Doll) the flight is terrifying in a prop plane and I was 99% sure our plane was descending straight into the ocean.
2. Hoi An, Vietnam - I enjoyed the tailor made clothing experience...it was certainly interesting to say the least. And the beach was gorgeous .
3. Halong Bay, Vietnam - A must see and fun to be on a ship, now if only next time we could hire a private yacht. But I did have fun and even made friends to do yoga with on the top deck one morning!
4. Luang Prabang, Laos - A very different experience and culture. I mean 11pm curfew! (Not that we have seen 11pm this entire time, but still), everyone feeding the monks every morning, no public displays of affection, really small town - just interesting in general.
5. Thailand - We have a hard time with this one because we both liked Bangkok but I liked Chiang Mai more because of our day with the elephants!! And Chiang Mai we went to the football match which was so neat to see. But Burr liked Bangkok because of its energy. I liked Bangkok because it was amazing to me to see all there interesting clothing choices!
6. Siem Reap, Cambodia - Wow talk about a lot of tourist traps, but a very fun town. Full of cheap things to do and see. And of course the temples of Ankor Wat are outstanding.
7. Hanoi, Vietnam - This is a place where you will get your toes chopped off. Seriously, walking on the street is so scary - but everyone does it. You cannot walk on the sidewalks because they are for parking and outside seating of restaurants (yes, its so strange). I don't think we heard the honking stop for more than 30 seconds in Hanoi. Craziness!
Lots of love from us
A and B
