Things I've learned in London for 2009
1. When its cold outside - RUN home!
*Seriously, when its really cold out I will run home from work. I will run from the EY building in my tights, work clothes, coat, hat, gloves, and uggs to the tube then again from the tube home. I told Burr this and it said I was nuts - I say I'm a genius - I'm burning calories and staying warmer at the same time :-) If I knew how to patent this idea I would.
2. Lunch food in London is icky
Yep, icky for sure. Here are the top 5 things I see people eat for lunch.
(a) Egg Mayo sandwich covered with butter (oh and mayo on the bread as well as the egg salad) (b) a baked potato with canned tuna on top (not kidding)
(c) Soup - nothing is wrong with soup, but all soup in london is more runny than a smoothie king smoothie - I believe if soup is for lunch there should be something in there you can at least chew!
(d) Salad bar - Again nothing is wrong with a salad bar, but British people tend to get 1 plastic container (not compartmentalized) and pile potato salad, pasta salad, chickpea salad, pea salad, and anything other salad covered in mayo on top of one another - than eat it all together....ewwww
(e) Pizza with cooked eggs and anchovies - yep a hard boiled egg piled right on top of your pizza - sounds delicious.
And people wonder why I bring my lunch everday - haha!
3. Online groceries are a fabulous invention
I fully intend to keep ordering grocercies online no matter where I am. At anytime I can log in type in "dryer sheets" and add them to my cart in a matter of 30 seconds - talk about not needing 5 lists where you lose 3 of them by the end of the week. Awesome and totally worth paying for some dude to bring them up my stairs each week.
4. If you want to make a lot of money in London go into alterations/dry cleaning
The lady the other day wanted $25 to hem a pair of pants - really?! I'm pretty sure that is $8 in Charlotte. I took the pants back and said no thanks - I learn how to do myself *
*Side note - my mom walked me through this on the phone after I stormed out of the alterations, but it proved much more difficult than I thought! - but still not difficult to pay someone that - ridic!*
5. You actually don't need a huge fridge, closet, oven, or other appliances
I can say we successfully had a new years' eve party for 14 people (no one was cramped), cooked a turkey dinner, and had Christmas brunch within 24 hours using a dorm size fridge and tiny little oven. (Please note - you need a husband plus 3 family members helping to accomplish this) but it was possible!
6. Walking everywhere is wonderful
I love walking around london. Its so nice to just walk out the door and go to the store, walk around the park, go watch the ice skaters, or go to a market. If it was acceptable to walk from South Park to Park road shopping center I totally would (in charlotte).
I gotta run... I will write more later
