Weekend Stuff

Hola! I am dying to go to Spain all of the sudden and the plane tickets are not cheap! Well, cheap relative to flying from the UK at least. This weekend was super fun. Friday night I had girls night and Burr did guys’ night with David. Jessica Coniglio was in town visiting so I went to Trader Vic’s with the 2 Jess’s. I have to say the food was not very delicious but that may have been caused by the fact that they waiter was TERRIFIED I was allergic to peanuts.

Story: So we finally sit down at our table, after having been shunned to the cocktail lounge and forced to drink tequila sunrises! As we sit down I tell the waiter I’m allergic to peanuts, to which he responds “SALAD!” – and I’m thinking “I’m sorry, I cannot only eat salad for dinner I have to eat it for lunch everyday!” I cannot really understand what he is saying with his Chinese accent but he finally understands that he can feed me some nachos and fish (or something) for dinner. So the next thing I know Mr. Chinese man is back by my side with a tiny little plate full of 1 inch size crumbles of tortilla chips. He is holding the chips under my chin and staring at me! I’m not kidding, he is not speaking just holding the plate of chips. So he finally says “Sweeeetttttcooooorrrnnn OK????” and I say “Yes, fine” (Hello they are tortilla chips! Who is allergic to tortilla chips and if you are I’m SO SORRY you are really missing out on a lifetime of chips and salsa).*

*Side Note 1- Some people say this to me after they figure out I’m allergic to peanuts and cannot have Snickers and Peanut Butter, but to me I don’t know what they taste like so its no big deal. Last week a partner (not specifying firms) who found out I was allergic to peanuts said “So, can you eat Peanut Butter?” To which I wanted to reply “Seriously, how did you get promoted?” - really? How can I be allergic to peanuts but not peanut butter. That is like being allergic to chickpeas but not hummus, does this make sense to anyone?!

Back to the waiter still holding the tiny plate under my chin - After I say “Yes” he just stands there, still holding the plate of tiny crumbs of tortilla chips so I finally say “Do you want me to try one?” and he smiles….ok, no problem. I pop one in my mouth and carry on my conversation. Well, he is STILL STANDING there. He waits until I chew and swallow the chip until he says “OK?” and again I reply “Yes” – SERIOUSLY DUDE? What did he think was going to happen if I ate the chip spontaneously combust? He seriously watched me eat it like I was an exhibit! It was terrible. Well, actually if he would follow me around and watch me eat all the time I would probably eat a lot less just by being so freaked out.

The rest of the night was fine, back to our flat to finish our grey goose – yummy!

Yoga class Saturday was interesting to say the least! The guy teaching was at least 60 years old, grey dreadlocks down his back and a beard to his chest teaches it. The weirdest part was during the class the dreadlock teacher would come around and pull the back of your shirt up (the lower back part) and rub this ointment on you, he does not ask or even tells you he is there, just slabs it on you! It smells like mentholadum and kinda makes a tingly feeling, but still I don’t some old dude rubbing stuff on my back when I’m trying to harness my chi! (totally joking about the chi).

Saturday night anniversary dinner was awesome. Sunday Burr and I went to the V&A museum and then brunch, and then I went to jazz class. Again 100 people in a room that fits maybe 50. Its like 90 degrees in there and we are all trying to dance to Britney – pretty funny. I really wish I could take a picture of the class just because its so “big city” People in this class seriously try out for dancing roles , there are auditions that take place in the lower ground of the building so they are dancing their hearts out – its awesome.

Today I have a case of the Mondays…..someone email me pleaseJ
Miss you
Anne

PS – When I say Miss you, even though I do miss everyone. I miss CLARE the most. I want to see Clare. I heard her laughing and crying on the phone yesterday but its not the same. Johnny sends a video from his iphone to me weekly which is awesome. Burr hates it though, because I’ll watch the 30 second video like 5 times and then start crying. So you can see how Burr is not a huge fan – haha! (But, my crying ratio has gone down ten fold since knowing Burr so he really has nothing to complain about. Guys out there – girls’ cry, at least normal ones. No, Dawn is not a normal one- luv ya!) Johnny/Meg – please send more! I miss my Clare Bear. Oh, Clare almost go an octopus bib this weekend, do you think she would rather have a ladybug, bunny, octopus, or pig? They are all quite cute.

Out and About

I think I’ve officially passed the “honeymoon” threshold with London. I am:
1. not speaking on the tubes b/c you are supposed to be silent or looking at anyone! *

*Side note 1 – This was proven very well on Monday (1 day before our 2 year wedding anniversary) Burr and I called each other at about 8pm and someone talked each other out of leaving the office and meeting at home for dinner – I was enticed by going to the new “tcby-like” place and if you read previous blog I was sorely disappointed. (shoud have stayed at work – Just kidding!) Anyway, Burr and I said we would meet at home. So I get on the tube, the Jubilee line, make my usual switch to the Picadailly line for another 2 stops. As I got on the train I did my usual – scope out the best spots to sit or stand and pick the one in the corner easy to read my metro or us weekly (if I have one). So I’ve been on the train for about 5 minutes, reading the comics or the fashion section when I look up and I realize the guy next to me looks just like Burr from behind, then his suit looks just like the one we bought Burr at xmas, and this guy is listening to his ipod –just like Burr….wait a minute, it is Burr!! He is literally 2 feet away from me and we did not even NOTICE each other! I tap him on the shoulder and I say “Did you see me!!!?” and he says “No, and I even walked in front of you a minute ago!” – hahahaha.)

2. Reading the Metro daily
3. wearing flats everywhere (tear, tear – LOVE my heels)
4. don’t even notice we don’t have air conditioning
5. think its totally normal to get groceries delivered at 10pm at night
6. can figure out the bus map (huge feat!) *

*Side note 2 – this does not mean I still don’t get lost, b/c I do get lost, usually on foot though. Then I just put my hand up and hail a cab. I think that is where my shopping budget goes to – cabs!

Thus far I know Burr and I are both really enjoying life in the big city. I love walking everywhere, don’t love the tubes but they do go quite quickly. (Look I said “Quite quickly?!” – who says that in the states, NO ONE! , I need to watch it when I was in the carolina’s I picked up a slight drawl (Esp. working with Kimberly and Alisha!!! Now a drawl with London terminology = not good)

Tonight Jessica Conilgio is in town (fellow EY’er from CLT, who I actually recruited¬!) She and Jessica Carvajal and I are going to Trader Vic’s – apparently its really popular so I’m excited for that. Saturday Burr and I have anniversary dinner, but Saturday afternoon I have a 2.5 hour yoga class I’m really pumped for. Sunday I’m going to jazz class with Jess. I really wish I could take a pic of this Jazz instructor she looks similar to “Jessie” from saved my the bell (hair style, but a little more red!)

Burr and I did get to watch GG last night, unfort there was not enough drama in it for me! Needs to step it up. And I heard that Biggest Loser is back on the air – yyyyeeessss. That is awesome, love that show.

OK I’m out.

Send me back to the islands....

Have you seen this pic? Its one of my favs. Burr was all worried about letting someone use our camera to take a pic as we went down the slide! I really did not care, as long as I got to go back down the slide. I think I need a Oceans of Fun fix or something, totally love those places! Amusement parks are amazing.

Good news Emily told us she might be getting married in Orlando! How cool would that be? Disney World here I come:-)

Its now starting to get a little chilly in London - boohoo. I think Burr and I are scared that the wonderful weather we have had for the past 6 months is going to leave us now, lots of rain and pashminas!

Want to go back to croatia asap!

Ohhh, at least tomorrow is Friday.
Adios for now

What's going on

Hi Friends!
Sorry we have not written in a while. We have been quite busy. Last weekend we had an EY pub crawl, but as I put it there was WAY too much “crawling” and not near enough “pubbing” – we walked 6.8 miles and went to 2 pubs, 2 pubs where you had time to drink ½ pint, seriously my legs ached. And of course I was wearing adorable shoes instead of sensible “trainers” as they call them here, so I was begging Burr for a piggy-back ride, to no avail. Since when do you have to be under the age of 12 to get piggy-back rides? I do not remember such a rule!

After the pub crawl we all got invited back to the big bosses house, it was awesome. He had the most amazing back yard with a labradoodle (sp?) I totally want one. And the prettiest arrangement of 12 blue hydrangeas were in their house, ahhh. Then they cooked burgers, hot dogs and had oreos!! I could not stop eating the oreos, how I miss terrible refined sugar – they don’t really have it in food over here.

Sunday we had a football party at the Iliff’s which was fun. Somehow I finagled the manager at the Palm to give me enough ranch dressing for a 14 person salad! It was fantastic – you cannot not have ranch dressing at an American football bash, it was the hit of the party. *

*Side note 1 – I attempted to make ranch dressing, I looked up the ingredients online and it is terrible for you! Its basically mayo and sour cream with some spices….I think I always knew this, but why did I have to know? Darn it.

This week was our 2 year wedding anniversary on Tuesday, however Burr had a work dinner that night and I had a “recruiting” event for junior league, so we are celebrating on Saturday. I’m going to a 2 hour yoga class with some of the junior league recruits! FUN!! Monday night we tried to have a little celebration by trying this frozen yogurt place we heard about. So, I’m all excited thinking I cannot wait for TCBY-like flavors again, well this is SO NOT TCBY. This is for real greek yogurt just frozen. Have you ever had greek yogurt? If you say you like it plain your lying. Because that stuff is terrible. You have to cover it in agava syrup to even swallow it. Needless to say, Burr and I went home without finishing ours’. Thank goodness I ordred grocery delivery at 10pm and I had ordered ice cream, whew saved my palette.

Last night Burr’s fraternity brother, Cameron, was in town. We had him over to our flat for dinner. (Do you remember me saying Burr’s frat bro’s come out of the woodwork in London – serisouly this is like frat bro no. 8 in 6 months!) Anyway that was nice to see him, tonight I cannot wait to sit down and watch GG! (Please tell me Blair has not lost her spice-ness since getting together with Chuck!)

Adios for now,
Anne

Beer Pong in England

Yesterday we attened Burr's work "Beer Ping Tournament", well it was not actually work it was just one guy from work hosting it. So, Burr and I thinking "tournament" meant there would be several games going on, big room, etc. etc.

Well as it turns out it was just 1 table, so everyone had to watch the humilating game I thew (I should really stick with flip cup,I was never that good at beer pong). Of course I blamed my lack of skill on the fact that the table was shorter and more narrow then a normal beer pong table should be, but still it was sad for a KU girl. I should know better! I was paired with this adorable English girl Liz and she thankfully made up for my skill. Burr played with Steve (not himself another Steve).

The tournament started at 2 so we made dinner pans at 7, not thinking there would only be 1 table - but we were wrong and we had to leave before I got worse (if possible) - but it was fun and we have made plans to try some fantastic Mexican resturant in Greenwich, I sure hope its fantastic!

Here are the pics....

As the day was going on we thought: If we were in Charlotte what would we be doing for Labor Day weekend. 2 thoughts, perhaps we would be in Vegas with Steve and Lee sipping margaritas by the pool (tear) or....we might be at the Camp Lincoln/Lake Hubert 100 year reunion!!! We were so sad to think of all our adorable friends sailing, making braclets, rock climbing, etc. etc. but then again London is great - just wish we could be at both places:-) CFAB - miss you all!!!

Hope everyone has a nice day off tomorrow, Burr and I will be at work! Think of us - haha.

I'm off to cook dinner now, Hansel, Burr's friend from UVA is coming over for dinner so I better cook something before Burr does - disaster!!!

MUAH MUAH MUAH

PS - Fun game, try and read the beer pong rules and see how different they are froms ours' in the US!!!

Pics From Durham

Cathedral -

No, not Durham North Carolina (don't want to be that close to Roy Williams!) Durham, England where Barb is in MBA school. We went to visit her last week over "bank holiday" weekend. It was our first time on a long train journey, which I have to say is WAY better than any airport - its so easy and close (and efficient!) no weather delays:-)

It was fun to see Barb and catch up on what was happening in our other sorority sisters' lives and ours! Barb is fantastic - super fun and always up for taking us around all day. We went to the church and the castle in Durham which was awesome. The castle is where Durham college is and they still wear full on Harry Potter style robes to dinner - how cool is that?!

Here are pics, hope you enjoy!!

See the castle!!! Pretty!!!

This last pic is burr and Barb high-fiving after attempting to open a bottle of wine, which barb had to hold onto with all her might while Burr tugged really really hard at the cork - it was interesting :-) But they got it opened, whew.

XO

A weekend in town, finally! ( I know life is so rough going from Croatia to the Northern Coast of England !) But, no worries we have weekend plans which starts off tomorrow at Burr's PwC Beer Pong Tournament - oh joy, kegs full of English Beer - YIKES!

Our week was good and busy! We had dinner with Hansel Shook, Burr's UvA friend who just moved here, then last night Burr hung out with Greg who was in town from Amsterdam. OK enough normal talk....

The weirdest thing I saw this week was a motorized skateboard - yes just like in Back to the Future! How cool was that?! This guy just flew down the street on the thing, amazing. I attended a hot yoga class that is so annoying...its just not the same as Charlotte yoga and its make me miss Charlotte. I want to yell at the teacher "That's not how they do it in Charlotte!" when they tell me to do things a different way, I don't want to do them a different way - I want to do them my way. so there! ( I realize I sound like I'm about 5)

Oh, I totally forgot to blog about the amazing seafood in Croatia. 2 different nights Burr and I ordered the "mixed grill" which consisted of a huge fish (tail and head included), mussels, clams, crab, tuna, etc. etc. - it was the biggest plate of fish ever - and all of it was caught that day talk about amazing. The pic we posted is of the shrimp we ate at this tiny island called Robinson. The restaurant is well known but you have to take a water taxi to get there, and there is no electricity or running water. People eat there and hang out on the beach (some without any clothing - ick!) but the place was fantastic - like heaven on earth. We were a little seafood-ed out to say the least by the time we got back from 9 days of it. Tonight is the first night we've been able to eat it.

Sadly by tan has disappeared, its like my body knows I'm in London and I MUST be pale!

I have begun to hunt for new flats. I decided ours is ridiculously loud and my ears are starting to hurt from wearing ear plugs everynight. We love the neighborhood, but now we know why we got in for such a steal:-) At least we are renting!

Keep in touch with us, oh our Skype camera works now so if you want to skype me to see our beautiful smiling faces, give us a buzz (or a bell as they say here) !
Go Jayhawks! Go Hoos!
Love
Anne

More Croatia Pics

Croatia 2009!! This is at the reception area of the hotel in Hvar. Look at those boats, I mean yachts. Can I have one please? (burr actually saw the price list for these only 25,000 Euro a week for the boat, not including food, drinks, captain or fuel - what a bargain!)
Burr in the Palace.

A little fun in the sun....

Don't you love Burr's hat? Do you think he looks a little Jason Mraz here? We are walking around the shops, so funny.

So.....my favorite thing about Croatia might have been the water slide at the swanky Hvar resort. Yes, I know there might have been celebs there who could have seen me, but it was SO fun:-) way better than just hanging out by the pool - hope you enjoy these pics.
Burr on the slide....

pic of the pool bar. We noted we loved the pool bar, but we got spoiled when were in Cabo where there were 7 pools each with its on pool bar. We also were slightly disappointed that pina coladas in croatia are served on ice (not frozen) , there were terrible - don't try them at home!

Anne on the slide....weeeeee

Pic on left is tiny private beach - Robinson where we ate lunch one day and hung out.
Pic on left is on the Riva - notice gelato in our hands:-) Burr had to put me on a 1 a day limit!!
haha
Hope you enjoyed the pics!
Love
Anne

Durham et al

Hi friends! Sorry I know we need to post more Croatia pics! Unfort. I did not see any celebs there, but did I tell you we sat next to Kid Rock at Del Frisco’s?? Pretty cool.

This past weekend we went to Durham, no not Durham NC – Durahm United Kingdom. Barb, my sorority sister is getting her MBA there so we went to visit. It was really fun!! Her cute little town where she went to college has some adorable stuff. Burr got to watch a lot of sports while we shopped. Burr also entertained himself by taking pictures of some ridiculous ensembles people wore on the streets. I will let you tell about those.

Coming up we have a peer pong tournament with Burr’s work on Saturday, next weekend we have a pub crawl with my work and a baby shower. So there are lots of things on the horizon.
We also found out that our friend, Hansel, from Charlotte just moved here for 6 months – crazy how people are just coming out of the woodwork!

We have lots of people saying they are coming to see us next summer so if you are one of them, pick your dates before someone else does J
Miss and Love you
Anne
